Workshops Overview!

We are pleased to share an overview of our two workshops to be held at the 2023 Annual Workshop and Conference in Whistler, BC:

Option1: FORENSIC & TACTICAL LINGUISTICS 101

Facilitated by Julia Kupper, Forensic and Tactical Linguist

This interactive 2-day workshop will introduce the fields of Forensic and Tactical Linguistics. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about diverse methodologies and apply their knowledge to a variety of language evidence. This will include written and spoken corroborations from international cases and inter-disciplinary research in the form of targeted violence manifestos and live-streams, threatening letters, ransom demands, bomb threats, suicide notes and confessions.

The first segment of the course will ask participants to conduct forensic transcriptions of handwritten, type-written and recorded evidence, an important foundation to develop the skill of accurate observations. During the second part, an overview of forensic authorship analysis, markedness theory and author profiling will be provided, with exercises for the audience that will emphasize language in a threat assessment environment. The third section will focus on linguistic threat analyses and illustrate different techniques that can assist in examining warning indicators in visual, verbal and typed terrorism communications.

Option 2:  INTERACTIVE OPERATIONAL INTERVIEWING WITH MENTALLY DISORDERED INDIVIDUALS: ADVANCED TWO-DAY WORKSHOP

Facilitated by: Dr. Russell Palarea, PhD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Operational Psychology Services (OPS) & Tonya Quillen Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), certified Trainer, Educator and Practitioner (TEP) of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.

This two-day workshop combines lectures with practical instruction to provide attendees with the knowledge and experience needed to effectively interview mentally disordered Persons of Concern in threat assessment and management investigations. Attendees will learn how to recognize and understand major mental illnesses and personality disorders, develop interview strategies, and determine the implications for assessing violence risk and developing management strategies. The first day will provide an overview of threat assessment and management models, general interview strategies, and an overview of psychiatric diagnoses, with a focus on personality disorders and personality characteristics. Attendees will then participate in an Interactive Operational Interviewing experience, applying this knowledge to a developing scenario with a Person of Concern who has a personality disorder. The second day will focus on major mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychotic disorders, with particular focus on understanding and interviewing Persons of Concern with delusional beliefs. Attendees will again participate in an Interactive Operational Interviewing experience with a Person of Concern who has a psychotic disorder.
